The flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia takes around 1.5 hours. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and AJet all operate the route with multiple daily departures from both Istanbul airports.
Neither airport is in Göreme — you’ll need a transfer either way. Which airport you land at determines how long that transfer takes.
Nevşehir (NAV) vs Kayseri (ASR) — Which Airport to Use
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is 40 kilometers from Göreme, roughly 40–50 minutes by road. Shuttle minibuses run from the airport to Göreme timed to flight arrivals. Fewer airlines fly here and fares can run slightly higher than Kayseri, but the transfer into town is simpler.
Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) has more airlines and cheaper fares, especially on Pegasus and AJet. The downside is distance — Kayseri is 75–90 minutes from Göreme. From the airport you need a city bus into Kayseri center then another bus to Göreme, or a private transfer arranged in advance.
Fly into Nevşehir if getting to your hotel quickly matters. Check Kayseri if the fare difference is large enough to justify the longer transfer.
IST vs SAW — Which Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side and covers most flights to both Nevşehir and Kayseri. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side — Pegasus and AJet run most domestic departures from here.
Flying from Sabiha Gökçen to Cappadocia is often cheaper, but SAW is further from the city center. Factor in the transfer time to SAW before deciding the fare difference is worth it.
By Overnight Bus
The overnight bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia is popular for a straightforward reason: you sleep through the journey and arrive in Göreme in the morning with a full day ahead.
The Sleeper Bus
Kamil Koç and Metro Turizm are the main operators on the istanbul to cappadocia bus route. Both run coaches with wide reclining seats and scheduled rest stops. Journey time is 10–12 hours depending on the operator.
Buses leave in the evening — typically between 7pm and 11pm — and arrive early morning. Take a window seat if you need something to lean against. Night buses get cold, so pack a layer.
Getting to Esenler Bus Station
All long-distance buses leave from Esenler Otogar on the European side. The M1 metro line stops directly at the terminal — around 30–40 minutes from Taksim. From Istanbul Airport, take the Havaist bus into the city then connect to the metro.

Step 2: Take the YHT — Yüksek Hızlı Tren, Turkey’s high-speed train — from Söğütlüçeşme to Ankara. Around 4–4.5 hours. Book on the TCDD website up to 30 days in advance.
Step 3: From Ankara’s bus terminal (AŞTİ), take a bus to Göreme or Nevşehir. The ankara to cappadocia leg takes around 4–5 hours with several operators running daily.
No direct train connects Istanbul to Cappadocia — this is a train-then-bus journey, not a single rail route. Total time runs 11–13 hours.
By Car
The drive from Istanbul to Cappadocia covers 720–750 kilometers depending on the road. Without traffic, it takes 7–8 hours. Istanbul traffic adds time at the start — leave early morning to avoid it.
The main route follows the O-4 highway through Bolu and Ankara, then south toward Nevşehir. Most of it is toll road; a Turkish HGS/OGS transponder helps but cash works at the booths. Petrol stations are frequent and signage is clear.
A car is worth it if you’re traveling with others or want to explore beyond Göreme. The underground cities, Ihlara Valley, and the smaller villages are much easier to reach with your own transport.
Getting to Göreme from the Airport or Bus Station
From Nevşehir Airport (NAV): Shuttle minibuses run to Göreme timed to arrivals. Most cave hotels also offer pickups if you let them know your flight — ask when you book.
From Kayseri Airport (ASR): No direct shuttle to Göreme. Take a city bus into Kayseri then a long-distance bus onward, or book a private transfer in advance. Private transfers are the better call for late-night arrivals when public buses aren’t running.
